The Wort Chiller is a fast way to chill your wort to yeast pitching temperature to get your fermentation off to a quick and healthy start. It is a plate type heat exchanger.
This 30 plate wort chiller is constructed from 304 Stainless Steel. like most plate chillers of this type, it has been brazed together with pure copper. The Chiller plate offered has a number of small ripples on each plate, small ripples create a larger surface area for the wort to travel over, thus allowing more time for the cold water to bring the wort to temperature.
If maintained correctly chiller plates are a better way to avoid infection when cooling your wort as the wort is cooled in an inclosed area that is not exposed to those bugs floating around in the air. Plate chillers also have greater cooling efficiency.
Cleaning a plate chiller is not easy, there is a bit more involved than a normal immersion chiller due to the tiny pockets created by the channels in the plates. The plate pockets can contain hop and wort remains which are basically full of sticky sugar. When cleaning the plate you need to remove these remains as an infection could be caused when chilling your next wort.
To clean the chiller plate you need to recirculate a solution of hot water and Sodium Percarbonate (Napisan) or a Powdery Brew Wash through the chiller as normal, then back flush the chiller by simply sending cleaning solution through the “wort out” side and out the “wort in” side. It might also be an idea to soak or leave the chiller in the wash and then rinse before use or use an industrial strength cleaner such as a “Void”, but be careful if you do this.
